In modern vehicles, advanced safety systems are becoming increasingly common, offering enhanced protection and confidence for drivers. The Forward Collision Alert (FCA) system on the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox is designed to improve driver awareness and safety by providing timely warnings of potential frontal collisions. This system helps drivers react promptly to avoid or mitigate accidents, making it especially valuable in busy traffic or highway conditions. This feature not only enhances safety but also contributes to a more relaxed and focused driving experience. This article provides a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to use and customize the FCA system in your 2015 Chevrolet Equinox.

System Guidelines

FCA System Overview

The Forward Collision Alert (FCA) system is designed to help reduce the risk of front-end collisions by providing timely warnings. If your vehicle approaches another vehicle too quickly, the FCA ativates a red flashing visual alert accompanied by rapid beeping sounds. Additionally, the system displays a steady red visual alert when following another vehicle too closely.

The FCA can detect vehicles up to approximately 197 feet (60 meters) ahead and operates at speeds above 25 mph (40 km/h).

Note:

  • The system can be turned on or off using the FCA control button on the steering wheel.
  • The FCA system may issue alerts for objects such as turning vehicles, vehicles in adjacent lanes, or shadows. These occurrences are part of normal operation and do not indicate a system malfunction.

WARNING:

  • The FCA is only a warning system and does not apply the brakes. You must remain attentive and be prepared to take action.
  • The FCA may not detect all objects, such as pedestrians, animals, signs, or guardrails.
  • The system may also fail to provide sufficient warning in time to avoid a collision, particularly in cases involving rapid approach to stopped or slower-moving vehicles. Always be prepared to brake as necessary.

Detecting a Vehicle Ahead

FCA warnings will only activate if the system detects a vehicle in front. A green vehicle-ahead indicator on the instrument panel confirms detection.

WARNING:

  • The system may not detect vehicles in certain conditions, such as on curves, highway exits, or hills, or in low-visibility situations.
  • Dirt, snow, or ice on the FCA sensor, windshield, or headlamps can hinder detection. Keep these areas clean and in proper working condition.

Collision Alert

If your vehicle approaches a detected vehicle too quickly:

Collision Alert

1. A red flashing indicators, and a series of high-pitched beeps sound.

2. The brake system may activate briefly to prepare for driver braking, causing mild deceleration.

3. Apply the brakes as needed to avoid a collision. Note that cruise control may disengage automatically during an alert.

Tailgating Alert

If the FCA system detects that your vehicle is following another vehicle too closely, the red Collision Alert display remains continuously illuminated.

Selecting the Alert Timing

The FCA timing can be adjusted to suit driving preferences and conditions.

  • Use the Collision Alert button on the steering wheel to set the timing to one of four modes: far, medium, near, or off.
  • The current setting is displayed on the Driver Information Center (DIC) upon the first button press. Pressing the button again will cycle through the settings.

Note:

  • The chosen timing setting affects both Collision Alert and Tailgating Alert.
  • Alert timing varies with vehicle speed; faster speeds result in earlier alerts.
Selecting the Alert Timing

WARNING: Alert timing settings may not be suitable for all driving conditions. Always consider traffic, weather, and personal driving habits when adjusting this feature.
