Perfect niche between pro and basic - would buy again

After a month of almost daily usage in a 2003 Toyota and 2013 Mazda, I'd buy it again. I'll describe what the marketing doesn't say or other reviews has discussed. Prior to this, I used Torque Pro on ELM327 since 2010. If you tinker with your car in any way, a generic OBD2 scanner is not enough today, except for basic troubles; modern cars are full of control computers, i.e., modules, finding them requires a scanner of more capacity, such as those thousand+ dollar annual license semi-pro scanners. Innova has found a niche between pro and basic consumer, in the top line model, the 5610

My primary need is to troubleshoot the drive train, to avoid being dead on the road in a long trip, repairing DIY items or confirming a pro mechanics diagnosis

Pros
It works as described and very high build quality made in Taiwan
Connection is fast and immediate vs a blue tooth dongle like the blue driver or ELM327
The cable is very long, and detachable and thus, replaceable if worn, has a light to make it easy to attach in the dark foot well were the OBD jack is, and easy not only to position in the cabin, drive the car with the OBD attached, but position it on the engine bay during troubleshooting
Optional AA battery usage so 5610 will retain data you can upload to its app later
It works stand alone to give you immediate and quick answers but can connect to an Android device via bluetooth to give you their diagnosis, save session results and provide graphing. I didn't test Wifi, blue tooth is flawless and automatic, but requires Internet access to complete or it will abort.
Tech support online is superb and answered in a day
the LCD has bright large colored screen, makes it easy to see, but keys are not backlit

It works by loading various car maker modules that enhance functions beyond basic OBD2 capability, and will change depending on your car's make, model and year. This makes is very hard to compare vs competitors since it 'morphs' to adapt to whatever car you have. It also may not cover all functions, particularly what you need, since it depends on what they were able to license from the maker, so best tested for what you need and returned if not, as you can't buy this purely based on the marketing literature or the website compatibility list, it may have more or less. For e.g. on my Toyota, generic OBD2 covers 18 PIDs, using the Toyota module, has 74 PIDs, Mazda module has over 200 PIDs, and this is just for the engine alone; there are more PIDs for other modules like ABS and TPMS. Like a cheaper scanner, it will reset MIL as well as service reminders, but when the module supports the advance functions, such as TPMS, will reset its DTCs if not self resetting once repaired. It does live data on generic and OEM, but it will only save generic live data

It is bidirectional, in that I can turn on/off modules, if supported. This helps diagnosis when no DTC are available. For example, to test the fuel pump, I can turn it on/off, I can hear the motor actuating as well as the relay. This allows me to check pump function, its relay or check fuel pressure without having to go back to try and start the car. I can actuate the AC compressor clutch bypassing the dashboard switch, in case of a switch failure, likewise for the power windows. If you do not turn OFF a switch, it will default back to OFF after a timeout, if you disconnect the scanner, or turn the engine off; this is not described in the manual but is expected otherwise it would be a catastrophe if you forget to turn off the fuel pump with the car not running.

Lifelong license, but per tech support, updates are annually, at most. If you have a newer car than 2022, it may not support it completely. Its perfect for cars past warranty, and older the better, which may likely needs more than preventive maintenance and that an owner may attempt to DIY.

Cons
Expensive, its priced far above the 'generic' OBD2 scanners but less than semi-pro and pro scanners

When cars change, the response of the 5610 changes, so its unnerving at first as you don't know if the unit broke. For example, ignition on only, my old Toyota will time out after 15 minutes and disconnect the 5610. On my Mazda, it stays on forever. On both, switching from an OEM to generic module after some time, may require the cable to be pulled and reinserted. These are not described in the users guide. I do not know if these are quirks of a normal 5610, a bug or normal OBD behavior.

No backlit keys, hard to see working in a dim cabin to select functions, so I use a headlamp.

Cannot upload OEM live data to the app, nor cannot export generic data to another app ... I've given these as a wish list to tech support

Fast, easy to use, saved me time and money

The Innova 5610 is fast, easy to use, and packed with features. It reads codes accurately, shows helpful live data, and has already saved me time and money. Feels like solid tool. Great tool for any DIY mechanic!

Great support from Innova

The scan tool arrived on time as promised. The only problem I had with the Scan Tool was that it would not connect to the up dating software that was downloaded to either my windows or MacBook computers. I did contact Innova and with in a day they sent an updated file to use on my windows computer. The scan tool did connect and no updates were needed. I was able to scan my vehicle and no codes or issues were found. Looking forward to using the scan tool to monitor my vehicles. I would recommend this for a person that works on their vehicles.

Amazing bidirectional tool - menus could be simpler

This is an amazing bidirectional scan tool, it does everything I've asked it to do so far. The only issue I have is it's not very user friendly. Often times having to dig through menus upon menus to find what I need. Decently large in your hand, but not so big that it is awkward. For the price point I would definitely buy it again. (This one is advanced enough, and has enough features that it would work for a full-time mechanic)

Buying a second one for my brother

This is the second I bought. It work real good and easy to use. The first one bought year ago. Was not working right when I got this one. I use the cable on the old one. And it work great. I am going to keep this new one. And buy a cable and give it to my brother. These are very good.

Exactly what I needed - reads and resets fuel trims

It is a good scanner for me. The special functions are nice. It is able to read and reset fuel trims. That is what I was looking for in a scanner.

Very capable for the price

It performed very well and aided me in diagnosing a tricky engine problem on my vehicle. Like other scan tools, the advanced tests are vehicle specific, but the live data capture and the Mode 6 tests were very useful. It doesn't do everything a $1,000 scan tool, but it's very capable and full-featured for it's price.

Perfect for the home mechanic - pays for itself

The 5610 is perfect for the home mechanic. With this scanner, the Innova website and Innova Customer Service support it's easy to identify and repair vehicle issues. It also does resets and relearns. Pays for itself the first time you repair a car problem without going to a shop.

Finally! Reset reluctant fill level on my Silverado

Finally! After spending hundreds of dollars on Launch and TopDon, I have found a tool that can reset the reluctant fill level on my 2017 Chevy Silverado 2500hd! I couldn't be happier about that but it's what I didn't expect that has me so excited! This tool isn't only lighter and easier to use physically, the menus and instructions are easily understood and comprehensive. The number of features this tool supports is insane, many which I hope I won't need. The companion app is just as impressive. It quickly Bluetooth paired with the device and gave me a simple but accurate report that even provided links to the replacement parts I need. I seriously couldn't be happier. Save your money and your sanity and get this one first or do what I EVENTUALLY did, contact each company separately and ask them which tool will specifically handle your function/module for your vehicle year, make, and model!!!

Works on Ford, GM, and Chrysler - no subscription!

I've only used it a week, but I used it on 3 of my vehicles, Ford, GM, and Chrysler. I like that I'm able to see live data to help confirm, and/or pinpoint the issue. This also seemed to be one of the few scanners that doesn't dupe you into a subscription to continue to utilize it. And when paired to the Repair Solutions app on my phone, the app will generate a report listing the severity of the issue and common solutions. Very happy so far.

Not too complicated, just enough features

I love this scanner not too complicated, but just enough features to almost get you in trouble Definitely would Buy again. Take some time playing around each car is different to get familiar with it.

Fixed my NOx sensor code with regen

This scan tool worked great on my 2015 2500 GMC with a NOx sensor code. Was able to do the regen and the code cleared and has been running great ever since.

Worth the upgrade from my previous model

I had a previous model so this one was an upgrade that was worth every penny. Very quick to read and easy to use to solve problems fast. Great work Innova!

Check engine light finally off!

Works great, helped diagnose and clear a code out of my 2018 Chevy Traverse. Happy to have my check engine light off now.

Free repair paid for the scanner!

Pulls codes from all modules, including FCA Gateway on Chryslers but cannot erase these ones. The SGW Must be read only w/o authorization or purchase. But 2 weeks after purchase my airbag light came on. The Innova displayed the codes and Innova supplies a data base for your vehicle with recalls, TSB. Researching the codes lead me to an open warranty dealer repair TSB. Found the TSB in the Innova data base. Took to dealer and repair was free under extended warranty. Value of repair was $348. So this free repair paid for the Innova. Plus no subscription fees are required and free updates. Verified buyer.

5 star choice compared to others

price seems a little high , but when compared to other companies with equal to scanners this is the 5 star choice. faster, website good, I have not had to contact customer service. be their reputation says they will be there for me.
