Proper understanding and use of cruise control are essential for a smoother and more relaxed driving experience. This guide provides an overview of the cruise control system and instructions for its proper use in your 2016 Hyundai Elantra L4 1.8L.
How to set/use the feature
Overview
With cruise control, you can maintain a set speed above 20 mph (30 km/h) without having to keep your foot on the accelerator pedal.

Cruise control buttons
- CRUISE (ON/OFF): switches cruise control on/off.
- CANCEL : cancels cruise control operation.
- RES+: accelerates or resumes speed.
- SET-: adjusts or reduces speed.

Warnings:
- If cruise control remains on (indicated by the CRUISE light illuminated in the instrument cluster), it can be unintentionally activated. To prevent accidentally setting a speed, keep the cruise control system off (CRUISE light off) when not in use.
- Only use the cruise control system when driving on open highways in favorable weather conditions.
- Avoid using cruise control when maintaining a constant speed may be unsafe:
- While driving in heavy traffic or where speeds vary frequently.
- On slippery roads, including those covered in rain, ice, or snow.
- On steep hills or winding roads.
- In areas with strong winds.

2. Accelerating using cruise control
- Press and hold the RES+ switch while watching the SET speed in the instrument cluster. Release the switch once the desired speed displays, and the vehicle will accelerate to that speed.

- Press and release the RES+ switch quickly. Each time the switch is pressed in this way, the cruising speed increases by 1 mph (1.6 km/h).
- Press the accelerator pedal. Once the vehicle reaches the desired speed, press the SET switch.
3. Lowering the cruise control speed.
- Press and hold the SET- switch. The vehicle gradually decreases in speed. Release the switch when you reach the desired speed.

- Gently press the brake pedal. Once the vehicle reaches the desired speed, press the SET- switch.
4. To accelerate while cruise control is activated
Press the accelerator pedal. When you release your foot from the accelerator, the vehicle will return to the speed that was previously set. If you press the SET- switch at the higher speed, the cruise control will maintain the increased speed.
5. Cruise control is deactivated when:
- Pressing down on the brake pedal.
- Activating the CANCEL switch positioned on the steering wheel.
- Pressing the CRUISE (ON/OFF) button deactivates both the CRUISE and SET indicators.
- Pressing the clutch pedal to disengage the transmission.
- Engaging the neutral gear.
- Slowing down the vehicle to 12 mph (20 km/h) less than the saved speed.
- Reducing vehicle speed to below approximately 20 mph (30 km/h).
- The ESC system is functioning (if installed).
- Downshifting to second gear while in sports mode.
Notice: Each of the preceding actions disengages cruise control (the SET indicator light in the instrument cluster illuminates), but only pressing the CRUISE (ON/OFF) button completely deactivates the system. To resume cruise control operation, press the RES+ switch on the steering wheel. The vehicle returns to the 0previously set speed, unless the system was deactivated using the CRUISE (ON/OFF) button.
