In modern vehicles, the "Override Brake-Shift Interlock" feature is an important safety function, particularly in the 2012 Ford Fusion. This feature prevents the driver from shifting the transmission out of Park (P) unless the brake pedal is fully pressed, ensuring that the vehicle cannot be moved unintentionally. However, in rare situations where the brake-shift interlock system fails, the driver may need to manually override this safety feature. This can be useful if the system malfunctions or the brake pedal is not being properly recognized by the vehicle. The override feature ensures that the driver can still shift gears, allowing them to move the vehicle if necessary. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to override the brake-shift interlock system in your 2012 Ford Fusion L4 2.5L.
How to Override the Brake-Shift Interlock
Feature Overview
This vehicle is equipped with a brake-shift interlock system, which prevents the gearshift lever from moving out of P (Park) while the ignition is in the ON position unless the brake pedal is pressed.
If the gearshift lever remains stuck in P (Park) despite pressing the brake pedal, possible causes may include a blown fuse or malfunctioning brake lights.
WARNING
- Do not drive the vehicle until you confirm that the brake lights function properly.
- Engaging this procedure removes the vehicle from Park, allowing it to roll freely. Always engage the parking brake before beginning and use wheel chocks if necessary for additional safety.
- If the brake warning light remains on after fully releasing the parking brake, this may indicate a braking system issue. Consult an authorized dealer for further inspection.

Override Procedure
If the fuse is intact and the brake lights are working, follow these steps to manually shift out of P (Park):
1. Engage the parking brake, turn off the ignition, and remove the key.
2. Use a screwdriver (or similar tool) to carefully remove the chrome trim ring (1) from the gearshift base.

3. Open the storage compartment lid and gently lift the trim panel (2) from the rear attachments, disconnecting it from the center console to expose the gearshift assembly.
4. Locate the brake-shift interlock lever on the driver's side of the gearshift assembly.
5. Press the brake pedal and use a screwdriver (or similar tool) to press and hold the brake-shift interlock lever, while pulling the gearshift lever out of P (Park) and into N (Neutral).

6. Reinstall the trim panel (2) and chrome trim ring (1) in reverse order.
7. Press the brake pedal, start the vehicle, and release the parking brake.
