In modern vehicles, automatic transmissions have become a standard feature, offering both convenience and ease of use for drivers of all skill levels. The automatic transmission on your 2015 Chevrolet Equinox simplifies driving by eliminating the need for manual gear shifting, allowing you to focus more on the road and less on vehicle operation. This system is especially valuable in urban environments with frequent stops and starts, as it provides smoother transitions between gears for a comfortable driving experience. This article provides a detailed guide on how to properly operate the automatic transmission in your 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, ensuring a seamless and safe driving experience.
System Guidelines
Basic Operation
Understanding the gear positions and their functions ensures optimal performance and safety:

P (Park)
This position locks the front wheels, preventing the vehicle from moving. Always shift to P when starting the engine or parking.
Note:
- The vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission shift lock control system. To shift from P (Park) when the ignition key is in ON/RUN, apply the brake pedal fully and press the shift lever button.
- If the shift lever resists, apply brake pressure, push the lever firmly into P (Park), and attempt to shift again.
WARNING:
- Always ensure the shift lever is fully in P and the parking brake is firmly set before exiting the vehicle. Failing to do so may result in vehicle movement and injury.
- Do not leave the engine running while unattended. The vehicle may move unexpectedly.
R (Reverse)
Engage this gear to back up the vehicle.
WARNING: Shifting into R (Reverse) while the vehicle is moving forward can damage the transmission, which is not covered by warranty. Ensure the vehicle is fully stopped before engaging R (Reverse).
N (Neutral)
In this position, the engine is disconnected from the transmission. Use N to restart a moving vehicle.
WARNING: Avoid shifting out of P (Park) or N (Neutral) while the engine is running at high speeds, as this may cause transmission damage not covered by warranty.
D (Drive)
In this position, the engine is connected to the transmission.
Passing Tips:
- At speeds below 56 km/h (35 mph), press the accelerator halfway down for more power.
- At speeds above 56 km/h (35 mph), press the accelerator fully.
WARNING:
- If the vehicle accelerates slowly or does not shift gears, have the transmission inspected immediately to avoid further damage.
- Avoid spinning the tires or using the accelerator alone to hold the vehicle on a hill, as this can damage the transmission and void the warranty. Use brakes to hold the vehicle in place.

M (Manual Mode)
Manual Mode allows the driver to control the gear range for specific driving conditions, such as towing or descending steep grades.
Using Manual Mode/Electronic Range Select (ERS) Mode:
1. Move the shift lever to M (Manual Mode).
2. Use the plus (+) and minus (-) buttons on the shift lever to increase or decrease the highest available gear.

Gear Range Display:
- The Driver Information Center (DIC) displays the highest available gear next to the M. All gears below the displayed range are automatically available.
- For example, if 4 (Fourth) is displayed, the transmission will automatically shift between 1 (First) and 4 (Fourth) gears.
Note:
- The system prevents downshifting to a lower gear if the engine speed is too high. Reduce vehicle speed if a lower gear is needed.
- Cruise control remains functional in Manual Mode.
