The Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) in the Ford Fusion is designed to enhance driver awareness and safety. This advanced feature uses radar sensors to monitor the areas next to and behind your vehicle that may not be visible in your mirrors, commonly known as blind spots. This system is a valuable aid to help drivers make safer lane changes and parking maneuvers. This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to operate the BLIS in your 2012 Ford Fusion L4 2.5L.

How to Operate Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)

System Overview

BLIS uses two radar sensors located near the rear bumper to detect vehicles in the blind spot extending approximately 10 feet (3 meters) behind and to the sides of your car where you can't see using mirrors.

If a vehicle enters the blind spot, an amber light illuminates on the corresponding side mirror.

Warnings:

  • To reduce the risk of injury, do not rely solely on the BLIS system. Always use your side and rearview mirrors and check over your shoulder before changing lanes. BLIS is intended to assist but does not replace attentive and cautious driving.
  • Occasionally, radar may trigger alerts even when no vehicles are present due to guardrails, walls, sharp turns, or nearby stationary vehicles. These alerts are temporary and self-correct.
  • The system may not detect parked vehicles, pedestrians, animals, or stationary objects. Detection may be affected by dirt or debris on sensors, vehicles moving very quickly through the blind spot, severe weather conditions, or multiple vehicles passing in a convoy.

System Activation

The system activates automatically when you start the car and move forward at speeds above 3 mph (5 km/h).

It stays active at all speeds but will not work when the car is in reverse or park.

Warnings:

  • Vehicles entering your blind spot from the rear or the side trigger the alert immediately.
  • Vehicles you pass or those entering the blind spot from the front trigger the alert after 3 seconds of being in the blind zone.
  • Quick-moving vehicles (passing in under 2 seconds) may not trigger an alert.
