How to Operate the Automatic Transmission

WARNING:

Always engage the parking brake completely and ensure the gearshift is securely in P (Park). Turn the ignition off and remove the key whenever you leave your vehicle.

How to Operate the Automatic Transmission

Gear Positions

P (Park)

This position locks the transmission and prevents the front wheels from moving. To shift your vehicle into gear:

  • Press the brake pedal.
  • Move the gearshift lever to the desired gear.

To shift your vehicle into P (Park):

  • Come to a full stop.
  • Move the gearshift lever and ensure it is securely latched in P (Park).

R (Reverse)

When the gearshift lever is in R (Reverse), the vehicle will move backward. Always ensure the vehicle is at a complete stop before shifting into or out of R (Reverse).

N (Neutral)

When the gearshift lever is in N (Neutral), the vehicle can start and is able to roll freely. Always keep your foot on the brake while in this position.

D (Drive)

This is the standard driving mode for optimal fuel efficiency. The transmission operates in gears one through six.

L (Low)

This mode:

  • Enhances engine braking for better control during downhill or mountain driving.
  • Adjusts shift timing to allow both upshifts and downshifts at higher RPMs, maximizing engine braking efficiency.
  • Is not suitable for prolonged or regular driving and may reduce fuel efficiency.

D (Drive) with Overdrive Cancel/Grade Assist

Pressing the control button on the gearshift lever engages overdrive cancel and grade assist functions.

D (Drive) with Overdrive Cancel/Grade Assist

Overdrive cancel/grade assist:

  • Overdrive is turned off.
  • The transmission operates in gears one through five.
  • The grade assist indicator light in the instrument cluster illuminates.
  • Enhances driving performance on hilly or mountainous terrain by offering extra engine braking and allowing lower gears during uphill ascents.
  • Provides additional engine braking through the automatic transmission shift strategy, which responds to vehicle actions such as acceleration, accelerator pedal pressure, brake pedal use, and vehicle speed.
  • Enables the transmission to choose gears that offer optimal engine braking based on the vehicle’s inputs, increasing engine RPM during braking.

Overdrive cancel with grade assist is intended to optimize gear selection for driving in hilly or mountainous regions. For improved fuel efficiency and transmission performance on flat roads, it is advised to switch back to D (Drive).

To switch back to D (Drive):

  • Press the transmission control button again.
  • The grade assist indicator in the instrument cluster turns off.
  • The transmission resumes operation in all six gears.
