How to Use Cruise Control
System Overview
The cruise control system lets you set the vehicle to maintain a constant speed without keeping your foot on the accelerator pedal. This system is designed to operate at speeds above approximately 25 mph (40 km/h).
Warning:
- If the cruise control stays on (with the CRUISE light in the instrument cluster illuminated), it may be unintentionally activated. To avoid accidentally setting a speed, make sure the cruise control system is turned off (CRUISE light off) when not in use.
- Only use the cruise control system while driving on open highways in favorable weather conditions.
- Avoid using the cruise control when maintaining a constant speed may be unsafe, such as in heavy or fluctuating traffic, on slippery roads (wet, icy, or snow-covered), winding roads, or roads with grades exceeding 6%.
- Use caution when driving downhill with the cruise control system, as it may cause the vehicle's speed to increase.
- When operating cruise control in a manual transaxle vehicle, avoid shifting into neutral without pressing the clutch pedal, as this can cause the engine to overrev. If this occurs, press the clutch pedal or turn off the cruise control using the ON/OFF switch.
To set cruise control speed:
- Press the cruise ON/OFF button on the steering wheel to activate the system. The CRUISE indicator light in the instrument cluster illuminates.
- Increase speed to the desired level, which must be over 25 mph (40 km/h).
- Move the lever down to SET- and release it when the desired speed is reached. The SET indicator light in the instrument cluster illuminates. At the same time, release the accelerator pedal. The vehicle will automatically maintain the desired speed.
Caution: On a steep incline, the vehicle may slow down or speed up slightly while descending.
To increase cruise control set speed, do one of the following:
- Push the lever up to RES+ and hold it. The vehicle gradually accelerates. Release the lever when the desired speed is reached.
- Move the lever up to RES+ and release it right away. Each time you do this, the cruising speed increases by 1.2 mph (2.0 km/h) or 1.0 mph (1.6 km/h).
To decrease the cruising speed:
- Push the lever down to SET- and hold it. The vehicle gradually decelerates. Release the lever when the desired speed is reached.
- Move the lever down to SET- and release it immediately. Each time you do this, the cruising speed decreases by 1.2 mph (2.0 km/h) or 1.0 mph (1.6 km/h).
To temporarily accelerate with the cruise control on:
If you need to accelerate temporarily while the cruise control is active, press the accelerator pedal. The increased speed will not affect the cruise control operation or alter the set speed.
To resume the set speed, remove your foot from the accelerator pedal.
To cancel cruise control, do one of the following:
- Press the brake pedal.
- Press the clutch pedal if the vehicle is equipped with a manual transaxle.
- If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transaxle or EcoShift dual-clutch transmission, shift into N (Neutral).
- Press the CANCEL button on the steering wheel.
- Reduce vehicle speed to at least 12 mph (20 km/h) below the stored speed.
- Reduce vehicle speed to below approximately 25 mph (40 km/h).
Any of these actions will cancel cruise control operation (the SET indicator light in the instrument cluster turns off) but will not deactivate the system. To resume cruise control, move the lever up to RES+ on your steering wheel. The vehicle returns to the previously set speed.
To resume cruising speed at more than approximately 25 mph (40 km/h):
If a method other than the cruise ON/OFF switch was used to cancel the cruising speed and the system remains active, the most recent set speed will automatically resume when you move the lever up to RES+.
However, it will not resume if the vehicle speed has fallen below approximately 25 mph (40 km/h).
To turn cruise control off, do one of the following:
- Press the cruise ON/OFF button (the CRUISE indicator light in the instrument cluster turns off).
- Switch off the ignition.
Both of these actions will cancel cruise control operation. To resume cruise control, follow the steps outlined in "To set cruise control speed."
