How to Operate the Automatic Transmission
Overview of the EcoShift dual-clutch transmission
The EcoShift dual-clutch transmission feature six forward gears and one reverse gear. The system automatically selects the appropriate gear based on the position of the shift lever.
NOTE: During the initial use of a new vehicle, the first few gear changes may feel slightly abrupt. This is a normal occurrence, and the shifting process will smooth out after the Transmission Control Module (TCM) cycles through the gears a few times.
- Black Arrow: Press the brake pedal when shifting gears if your vehicle is equipped with a shift lock system.
- White Arrow: The shift lever can be moved without restriction.
Shift Position Purposes and Functions
P (Park)
Always ensure the vehicle is fully stopped before shifting into Park (P). This action locks the transmission and prevents the front wheels from turning.
R (Reverse)
Select this position to move the vehicle in reverse.
Note: Ensure the vehicle is fully stopped before shifting into or out of Reverse (R) or Drive (D) to avoid damaging the transmission, except as noted in the "Rocking the vehicle" section.
N (Neutral)
The wheels and transmission are not locked, so the vehicle can roll freely even on a slight incline unless the parking brake or service brakes are engaged.
D (Drive)
This is the standard position for driving forward. The transmission automatically cycles through six gears, optimizing both fuel efficiency and power.
For additional power when overtaking another vehicle or ascending hills, press the accelerator pedal all the way down. This causes the transmission to automatically shift to a lower gear.
Warning
- Always inspect the area around your vehicle for individuals, particularly children, before shifting into Drive (D) or Reverse (R).
- Before exiting the driver's seat, ensure the shift lever is in Park (P), engage the parking brake completely, and turn the engine off. Failure to follow these steps in sequence may result in unexpected vehicle movement.
- Engaging Park (P) while the vehicle is moving will lock the drive wheels, leading to a loss of control.
- Do not rely on the Park (P) position as a substitute for the parking brake. Always confirm the shift lever is securely in Park (P) and the parking brake is fully engaged.
- Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.
Sports Mode
For additional power when overtaking another vehicle or ascending hills, press the accelerator pedal all the way down. This scause the transmission to automatically shift to a lower gear.
In sports mode, you can manually change gears by moving the shift lever back and forth.
- Up (+): Push the lever forward to shift up a gear.
- Down (-): Pull the lever backward to shift down a gear.
DS mode (Drive Sporty) – EcoShift dual clutch transmission
DS mode enhances the vehicle's performance for the driver. To activate DS mode, shift the transmission to DS. If you use the [+] or [–] gear, it switches to sports mode. The transmission automatically adjusts at higher engine speeds based on engine load, your driving style, and vehicle conditions.
In DS mode, engine braking is not available when coasting downhill. If you use the paddle shifters in DS mode, the gear switches to sports mode. Shifting to D (Drive) reverts the gear to D (Drive) mode.
When stopping the vehicle with the parking brake while in Drive (D), the vehicle may not move even after releasing the parking brake. In such cases, you can get the vehicle moving by pressing and releasing the foot brake, applying the accelerator, or shifting the lever from Drive (D) to Neutral (N) and back to Drive (D).
NOTE:
- In sports mode, you should upshift based on road conditions, ensuring the engine RPM stays below the red line.
- Only the six forward gears are available in sports mode. To reverse or park, shift to R (Reverse) or P (Park) as needed.
- Downshifts occur automatically as the vehicle decelerates, with 1st gear engaging when the vehicle comes to a stop.
- When engine RPM nears the red line, the transmission automatically shifts to a higher gear.
- For optimal performance and safety, the system may prevent certain gear changes even if the shift lever is moved.
- On slippery roads, start by pushing the shift lever to the + (up) position to engage 2nd gear for smoother acceleration. Shift back to 1st gear by moving the lever to the - (down) position.
Paddle shifter (if equipped)
- The paddle shifter can be used when the shift lever is in Drive (D), DS mode, or sports mode.
- The paddle shifter can be used when the vehicle is traveling at speeds above 6.2 mph (10 km/h).
Pull the [+] or [-] paddle shifter once to shift up or down a gear, and the system will switch from Drive (D) mode or DS mode to sports mode.
If the vehicle speed drops below 6.2 mph (10 km/h), if you press the accelerator pedal for more than 7 seconds, if you shift from Drive (D) to sports mode and back to Drive (D), or if you hold the [+] paddle shifter for over 1 second, the system will switch from sports mode to Drive (D) mode or DS mode.
With the shift lever in sport smode
Shift to DS mode and move the shift lever [+] or [-] to change up or down a gear.
Shift-lock system
For your safety, the automatic transmission includes a shift-lock system that prevents shifting from P (Park) to R (Reverse) unless the brake pedal is pressed. To shift the transmission from P (Park) to R (Reverse):
1. Press and hold the brake pedal down.
2. Turn on the engine or switch the ignition to the ON position.
3. Shift the lever.
Shift-lock override (if equipped)
If the shift lever won't move from the P (Park) position to the R (Reverse) position even with the brake pedal pressed, continue holding the brake pedal down and follow these steps:
1. Gently take off the cap that covers the shift-lock access hole.
2. Insert a screwdriver into the access hole and press down.
3. Shift the lever.
Ignition key interlock system (if equipped)
To remove the ignition key, ensure the shift lever is set to the P (Park) position. The key will not come out if the ignition switch is in any other position.
