The 2015 Chevrolet Equinox L4 2.4L may encounter an "Starter Solenoid Click, Engine Does Not Start" issue, where the engine turns over but fails to start and sustain operation. This condition typically indicates issues in the fuel delivery, ignition, or engine management systems. Systematic troubleshooting of components such as the fuel pump, ignition coils, or sensors can help identify the root cause of the problem and restore proper engine functionality, ensuring reliable vehicle performance.
Procedure
Note: Before starting the procedure, make sure:
- Fully charged battery
- Acceptable engine cranking speed
- Adequate fuel in the fuel tank
1. Crank the engine for up to 15 seconds, after that use a Scan Tool to verify any Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) set.
Note: If DTC(s) are present, troubleshoot these DTC(s) first, then continue with the procedure.
2. Turn the ignition ON, verify the security lamp and the instrument cluster illuminates momentarily.
- Expectation: working normally.
3. Crank the engine, and use the Scan Tool to verify the Engine Speed and Mass Airflow sensor Parameter ID (PID) values.
Note: The MAF sensor circuit may cause this Symptom without setting a DTC.
Expectation:
- Engine Speed PID value greater than 0 RPM.
- Mass Airflow Sensor PID value greater than 0 Hz.
4. Turn the ignition OFF, and perform the spark test on each ignition coil with a spark tester.
- Expectation: The spark tester sparks when the engine cranks. Note: An erratic or weak spark is considered as a no-spark result.
5. Turn the ignition OFF, and connect a pressure gauge on the fuel line.

6. Turn the ignition ON, use the Scan Tool to activate the fuel pump several times, and verify the value of the fuel pressure on the gauge.
- Expectation: Between 50 – 100 psi (345 – 690 kPa).
7. Turn the fuel pump OFF, and verify the value of the fuel pressure on the gauge after 1 minute.
- Expectation: Between 5 – 87 psi (34 – 599 kPa).
8. Verify none of conditions listed below are present:
- Air intake duct collapsed
- Air filter element restricted
- Spark plugs fouled by gasoline or coolant
- Skewed Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor
- Exhaust system restricted
- Contaminated fuel
- Faulty or damaged mechanical engine component
Conclusion
Understanding and addressing an " Engine Cranks but Does Not Run " issue requires a systematic approach to pinpoint the underlying cause. This guide provides a comprehensive diagnostic framework to help you identify and resolve the root cause efficiently, ensuring your 2015 Chevrolet Equinox L4 2.4L operates reliably and without unnecessary downtime.
